Het leuke aan de audio- en videocompressiestandaard op de computer is wel dat er zoveel verschillende van zijn. Wil je dus kijken naar films en luisteren naar muziek, dan moeten een berg codecs geïnstalleerd worden. K-Lite maakt dat eenvoudig door een aantal pakketten aan te bieden met daarin, afhankelijk van de variant, de minder of meer belangrijke codecs. De kleinste, K-Lite Basic, heeft alleen voor video de DivX- en XviD-codec aan boord en voor audio de Fraunhofer MP3 en AC3 DirectShow-decoder. Verder bevat deze DirectVobSub voor het weergeven van ondertiteling en GSpot, een programma of te bepalen met welke codec een audio- of videobestand is gemaakt.

Het K-Lite Codec Pack bevat daarentegen elke codec die je je maar kunt bedenken en is in staat om elke bestand, gemaakt met de meest exotische codec, af te kunnen spelen.

The Mail Panel:

With this new Mail panel, you can decide for yourself what items to show, and in what order. Not using the ‘Attachments’? Just hide it. Want your IMAP account on top? Just drag it up. Etc. Furthermore, you can now create folders to organize your mailing list and newsfeeds, which is great for users who have many of them. It is also possible to select in each category (like Attachments, Labels, Feeds, etc) which individual items to show and which items to hide. Speaking about feeds, you now will get the Mail panel for easy switching between feeds, without having to set up any mail accounts. As long as you don’t set up a mail account, the panel will only contain your feeds with a dedicated toolbar and context menu. Other changes are the automatic appearance of the Mail panel whenever you switch to a mail tab – and automatically returning to the previous state of the panels when moving back to a not-mail tab. Also, POP accounts have gained Inbox and Sent views for themselves.

De 5e Beta versie van Mozilla’s Firefox 4 browser is nu uit te proberen.

Versie 4 van de populaire Mozilla browser zou een geheel nieuwe look moeten krijgen die doet denken aan Google Chrome. Tabs zullen nu boven de adresbalk worden geplaatst en de menu balk krijgt een simpeler ontwerp. De menubalk verdwijnt waarschijnlijk helemaal – of je moet hem handmatig activeren.

Voor de eerste keer zal iedere tab als een apart proces worden opgestart. Moch er zich foutmelding voordoen dan crasht alleen de desbetreffende tab en niet de hele browser. Tenminste dat is de theorie, feit is dat zelfs een foutje in een tab zelfs nu nog de hele browser kan doen crashen.

Ook nieuw: Met Firefox Sync wil Mozilla een standaard add-on aan de browser toevoegen die je favorieten lijst moet synchroniseren op verschillende computers. Een account manager helpt je met het beheren van al je login informatie. Je kunt met een druk op de knop dan inloggen op sites als Facebook en Gmail.
